Odysseus And His Crew Were Just Leaving The Land Of The Dead On Their

Odysseus and his crew were just leaving the Land of the Dead on their way to Kirke's island to bury Elpenor as Dawn's finger tips of rose slowly crept over the morning sky. Odysseus was telling his men the stories and prophesies he had just learned when the sky started to darken. A storm was upon them. The wind started to pick up as waves crashed harder and harder against the side of the boat until finally the men no longer could grip the oars and they lost control. All they could do was pray to the Gods for mercy and hang on for their lives. Suddenly, as quickly as the storm arrived it left. The skies lightened, the seas calmed, and the winds stopped. The men stood up and looked around wondering where they were. Finally, one of the men spotted land not too far away. As they neared the island, it seemed perfect. It was like paradise. There was lush vegetation, numerous trees, and plenty of animals. The closer they got the better it looked. What Odysseus and his men didn't know was that it was the island of Arachnia, goddess of spiders. She put many spiders on her island that wove giant invisible webs to trap any intruders. The men circled the island looking for a space to land. It didn't take them long. They quickly landed and sent out a scouting group. The others started to inspect the damage to the boat from the storm. The group thought there would be no dangers, as the island seemed so perfect. How wrong they were. Soon after they were out of sight of the boat one of the men was trapped in a giant spider web. The more he squirmed the more stuck he got. The others had no idea what was going on. It looked like he was insane. He appeared to be floating since his legs were so entangled they no longer touched the ground. The others, out of fear, ra n swiftly back to the ship. Odysseus, great conqueror, asked, "Where is the fifth man I sent out with you?" The leader answered, "We don't know what happened to him. As if by magic, he just started floating in the air. He then started frantically squirming and yelling. ?Get me out, I'm stuck!' We tried to cut him loose from whatever he thought he was stuck on, but our swords merely made a loud noise as if we had struck the metal of a shield, yet we saw nothing but the land ahead." "Hmm. . .," Odysseus thought, "I shall go with two of you and two of my strongest men. We shall go to him and try to find out what happened. You two, you shall come with me and these two who have already been, Nausicaa, I leave you in charge!" "Yes, sir!" Nausicaa gladly accepted. Odysseus and his group wandered for hours trying to find the crew member. Soon night fell, and the men decided to rest. As the rest of the men slept, Odysseus lay awake. Hermes came to warn him of Arachnia's spider webs. "Odysseus," Hermes called, "come with me and I shall tell you how to conquer the secrets of the island and rescue your lost man." "Continue . . .," Odysseus replied interestedly. "Well, you have landed on the island of Arachnia, goddess of spiders. She has made this island appear to be perfect, but there is one danger. On the island, she put spiders that weave invisible webs as strong as metal and very sticky. This is what happened to that man of yours. Now, there is only one way to prevent getting stuck in her webs." "Ho do I prevent my men and me from getting stuck?" Odysseus asked. "You must rub aloe all over yourselves," Hermes replied. Why Purse a Master’s Degree Essay Due to the competitive marketing many are pursuing a higher education beyond their bachelor’s degree. My decision to purse a master’s degree has always been a personal goal, but with the change in the market I realized my bachelor’s degree would no longer be sufficient or marketable in a couple of years. Many would say that obtaining a master’s degree is only as valuable as how your current or future employer measures advanced education. There are many rewarding benefits of pursing a master’s whether for a personal goal, career change, or salary increase these are all convincing motives. This paper will explore the various motivations that resulted in my decision to purse a master’s degree. Initially a master’s degree will give me the added credentials needed to pursue a promotion or career change that I would not have been considered for with my current education level. The norm was that a company required you to have a bachelor’s degree to be considered as a candidate in the corporate world. This is no longer the case as employers are demanding candidates attain the life experience in conjunction with a master’s degree. Stronger economy and more company demands for management degrees have positively shifted the local and international market for candidates whom hold a MBA (Rebecca Kaplan (2008). â€Å"Demand for MBA on the Rise). This evidence confirms having a master’s degree significantly increases my marketability. Since only a small percentage of people in the United States have a master’s degree, holding one can put me ahead of the pack when competing for a job (â€Å"Jane Porter, (2006). â€Å"Forecast: MBA Hiring Up Again). Employers are leaning toward hiring more MBA candidates because they are looking for people with managerial and team experience (â€Å"Jane Porter, (2006). â€Å"Forecast: MBA Hiring Up Again). These facts indicates that companies value a higher education and are willing to provide more opportunities, greater compensation packages and greater chances for promotion. In 2007 Radford proclaimed an advanced degree will provide hopeful with a better professional network and insights into the working practitioners. Holding a master’s degree will also expand my knowledge in a specialized area and improve performance in many areas of my work and personal life. Following this path will allow me to utilize my bachelor’s degree foundation to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for my field of study. As a person high in conscientiousness, people may perceive me to contribute to a higher level of job performance. This personality trait is a strong focus behind my plans for a master’s degree. If I am going to be portrayed as person whom exerts greater levels of effort on the job, then I should have the knowledge and the degree to back my training and experience. Based on Jungian’s Personality Assessment, I am well suited for a management position. I am viewed as a person well organized who is open to learn new skills and updating current skills, which is a key area of interest for employers. A Master of Business Administration translates into salary increase, as with most fields. If the company is willing to invest in my education, I believe the company is quietly endorsing that a master’s degree is valued and expected for high-level professional. Consequently, the benefits I will receive from this degree will give me self-assurance to know that I have the collective resources of knowledge, effective decision-making and skill sets needed to be successful in my personal and professional life, (Gary Radford, (2005). Having a master’s will give me a sense of future employment security and will allow me to gain qualifications that I may have missed in my earlier education. The school of choice also heavily weighed on my decision. I debate for several months whether online or classroom format would be suitable for me. After speaking with the University of Phoenix enrollment counselor I was excited about the learning environment. I understood that taking courses online allowed the flexibility I needed to sustain a work-life balance. There was also the fact that I would be communicating with different individual who I could openly share experiences and gain valuable knowledge that can not always be taught from a book or a classroom setting. A master’s degree is a good investment the evidence is clear. Yes, it will take time, dedication, and money to complete my degree, but the return on my investment is all worth the effort. In addition, the increased sense of achievement, career opportunities, new circles of friends and networks along with the new ranges of skills I will gain are some of the major reasons that confirmed my decision. Whether personal or practical, a master’s degree can be both life affirming and career enhancing. As stated by Dr Bruce Lewis, an education beyond a bachelor’s will put you in a better position to help your family, your community and give you the kind of life you dream of having. The more education you pursue, the better career options you will have. The Data Protection Act of 1984 has been revised and the new 1998 Act was brought into force on 1 March 2000. The new act changes original definitions and meanings and it broadens the scope of the original act. Personal data shall be accurate and where necessary kept up to date. Fifth Principle. Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes. Sixth Principle. Personal data shall be processed in accordance with the rights of data subjects under this act. Seventh Principle. Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data. Eighth Principle. Personal data shall not be transferred to a country or territory outside the European Economic Area, unless that country or territory ensures an adequate level of protection for the rights and freedoms of data subjects in relation to the processing of personal data. Such legislation not only seeks to safeguard the rights of service-users who access my organisation but also to offer rules to Council in terms of appropriateness of processing information and knowledge.

How did the transition from non-patriarchal to patriarchal culture take place? Darwin's theory of evolution suggested that patriarchy served the best interests of species survival. I agree with Darwin and feel that patriarchy was essential for the human race to last as long as it has but I also think that it is a trend that its rein will soon be over. There are a few reasons for the development of Patriarchy and most of them revolve around the development of agriculture. The civilizations began to develop and become more prosperous because of the agricultural jobs the men had. The jobs that the men accomplished revolved around strength and power and the women of that society couldnt perform those tasks. The roles of the women in this society consisted of gathering food and having children. They could not hunt because they needed to take care of their young ones. The mens roles in this society consisted of the hunting of the food and protecting the community. In this era those things were valued more then the jobs that the women possessed because those jobs could save the lives of all of the people in the community. Another reason that society became more patriarchal was because women are the carriers and bearers of children. In the beginning, women were honored for this but it became a disadvantage later on. The religion that they practiced emphasized the importance of a womens virginity on marriage and stressed modesty. Also a very big portion of the Mesopotamian laws, such as the Hammurabic code, had many laws emphasizing limits and inferiority of the women. Because of this many women were looked down upon and treated as property and a way to keep the civilization going and pass on the family name.
